Neo Geo AES

CleanPower USB-C (Neo Geo AES)

5min

The Neo Geo AES has a mixture of 5V and 9V variant power inputs. This is dangerous as it can lead to blowing up your AES using the wrong power supply.

On top of that, who doesn't want USB-C power on all your consoles for the sheer convenience factor.

At present I haven't designed a dedicated drop in CleanPower for the Neo Geo AES, but the end goal is to send USB-C power through the console to the 5V rail. For this the Mega Drive 1/2 or Master System 1/2 CleanPower work perfect.

I use the Master System 2 CleanPower for now as the USB-C bracket fits the best, with a bit of epoxy to secure it in place.

If I have spare, I also make use of the Dreamcast CleanPower bracket (but not the USB-C board from the Dreamcast CleanPower as that will send too much voltage and blow it up).

Here is an example of the Dreamcast bracket used with a Master System 1/2 CleanPower.

CleanPower Board Install

For every version of Neo Geo, soldering the GND (black wire) and VCC (red wire) to the CleanPower board is the same. Solder them to these points.

From this point on the install will vary depending on your board. The idea is to bypass the old circuitry, inductors, diodes and regulators to send the 5V from the CleanPower all the way through the power switch to the final 5V circuit.

NEO-AES3-3

The 3-3 variant is a 9V variant with a switched ground (so the power switch connects ground to ground) and the input power is supplied to the LM2576 at all times.

For this we remove the choke and inductor to disconnect the input and outputs, then re-wire the ground to the switch, and VCC directly to the final 5V output pin.

NEO-AES3-5

The 3-5 variant is a 9V variant with a switched VCC so the power switch connects VCC to the LM2576 regulator when switched on.

For this we remove the diode and inductor to re-wire the output from the switch straight to the final 5V output pin.
