Memory Card (Neo Geo AES)
A memory card on the Neo Geo is used to save high scores, game progress, and store/load game saves.
You insert the memory card in the far right of the console.
The memory card for the Neo Geo is a 2kb sized memory card that contains the LH5116HN static RAM organized as 2,048 Ã 8 bits.
The format of the memory card is a standard JEIDA V3.
Originally the cards came in a cardboard box, with a manual, hard case and sleeve.
As you can see from the text on the card, there is an in-built lithium battery inside the card.
You can test operation in several ways.
Firstly, if you have a UniBIOS installed, hold all 4 buttons (A,B,C,D) during power up to get into the memory card test screen.
From here you can format the card, see what's stored on it, copy/delete data and so on.
To test in a real game, just play a game with the memory card inserted and you should see at the end of every game (leaving Continue to run out for example) it should ask if you want to save your progress.
The memory cards in the AES have volatile SRAM, meaning your game saves are only backed up so long as the internal lithium battery has charge.
Once it runs out, the memory card will lose its save once removed from the console (as the console provides the memory card with power when inserted, and the battery provides power when the card is removed.
We offer a battery replacement service here.
One cool thing is you could save your progress on your home AES memory card and take it to the arcades to load your saves on the arcade MVS machines.
