CleanPower USB-C (Mega Drive 2)

4min

The Mega Drive 2 CleanPower is a USB-C power mod for the Mega Drive console to allow you to power it from any USB-C or USB-A to C cable/charger.

You can even power your Mega Drive from your phone by a USB-C to C cable!

Install is pretty simple; open the console up and locate the voltage regulator. The large 3 pin device below the DC power input.

Then bridge the outside two pins using the wire provided from the other side. Notice I use a pad slightly away but still connected to the same pin.

Bridge the D1 or D2 diode by the power switch (it was there for reverse polarity protection of the old DC jack which is impossible with USB). With USB this drops the 5V input to 4V so needs to be bridged.

Remove the old DC port, clear the 3 holes, and solder in the 3 pins onto the CleanPower board and through the Mega Drive holes.

Now make sure your CleanPower is soldered in the correct place by test fitting it into the console. If not warm up the solder on the pins and move the port back/forward as needed.

You can now use any USB-C to C or USB-A to C cable, and any charger at all, and it will work to power your console.

Any current and voltage is ok, as the USB-C protocol negotiates voltages so you will only ever send 5V into the console, and the current will only pull what it needs.
